Fish Tausi: My Holy Week Indulgence 04/03/2012
My eat out tribute to the Holy Week culture of Roman Catholicism has always been abstaining from pork or beef during the religious season at least once. This year, I zeroed in on Chowking's Fish Tausi Chef Bowl Special. It's a great alternative to bangus or fish nuggets. The sauce alone kept me going for the rice. I'll be in Quezon Province in a few hours. Let's see what Padre Burgos has in store for the Indulger... Add Comment Pretend Healthy Snack 04/03/2012
If you're constantly exposed to fast food fare and the rice meal culture for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, then you are living my life. I used to never consider eating a sandwich as alternative to a heavy rice meal. I used to think that it was foolish to abstain from Chinese food with fried rice or from the chicken and rice combo in favor of stuffed bread Well, the stuffed bread that I used to stay away from is now a weekly staple for dinner. Ever since Country Style opened in our office building, I'd always schedule my favorite Sunriser BLT (what Country Style calls its bacon-lettuce-and-tomato sandwich) for dinner twice a week. Mind you, it's not as healthy as you think. It may not be a rice meal, but it's got enough bacon and mayonnaise to dispute your pretend healthy snack. Fish Diet: Salmon Cakes with Brown Rice 09/21/2011
I was away from blogging for more than a week and focused on some health issues that my family doctor stressed out to me. He wants me to go less on my pork and beef intake and continue to entertain a variety of ways how fish can be enjoyed. The result of this food assignment (or doctor advice ha-ha!) is a treat of Salmon Cakes -- chopped pink salmon baked or fried with bread crumbs. Each cake is a mixture of egg whites, minced onion, and other stuff which can be potatoes, dill weed or even lemon juice. I got my serving of these savory cakes at Pancake House which is starting to be my meal marina. The serving is made healthier with brown rice which can be sticky to the palate if you're not used to it. The rice even had raisins which gave each bite of the Salmon Cake a twist. The bursts of the raisins' plump sweetness and the cake's crunchiness were a good match. Fish Diet: Loving It In Lemon 09/10/2011
Lemon chicken always appealed to me. When it became predictable that every time I ordered something glazed with lemon it would have to be chicken, I shifted mindset. Similar to my work shift that seem to change every two months, a crossover was imminent. With pun intended, it's time for lemon fish to grace the chopping board. Pancake House's new set of dishes includes one for less than P150, so it was just reasonable to have my fish pimped. Attention, Vegetarians and Non-Vegetarians 09/09/2011
I am thrilled to inform you that Food Editor and Stylist (also former office mate) Dolly Dy has finally launched her own cookbook. It's simply called Pinoy Vegetarian Cookbook and it's surely nothing that's on local bookstores yet because it's basically not just for vegetarians. The 68 recipes are also concoctions that even non-vegetarians would love. The project is actually a tag team effort with Susana Dy. For only P195, Pinoy Vegetarian Cookbook deserves a space in your kitchen cabinet or library. The Stuff This Pork Chop Is Made Of 09/09/2011
Most mall-based restaurants nowadays offer the same type of dish. If there's even a variation in the serving, it's not something so distinct. An example is the very predictable pork chop. Fortunately, Almon Marina has a version called Stuffed Pork Chop that caught my hungry eyes. The meat chop is generously stuffed with cheese, apple slices, herb and spices. For P185, this pork cut variety is quite memorable and worth tearing into. Fish Diet: Great To Be Grilled 09/08/2011
I've read in a diabetes-oriented website that it's not healthy to have fish in one's diet on a daily basis. This, of course, took me back to my grade school years of having to stare at the food pyramid one too many times. The info had stuck with me since. And it's come in handy now that I'm an adult and forced to eat out every single day with my work schedule. Ever since my graphic designer friend informed me two years ago that Kenny Roger's Roasters would shift to a healthier selection of chicken choices, I immediately anticipated the addition of fish. And I was right. This is why I would always visit the restaurant at least once a month just for the Grilled Fish Fillet. It's not really a budget breaker at P150+ because some people are willing to pay for fast food crap for the same price. Besides, Kenny's Grilled Fish Fillet brings it home with corn and carrots as siding. This Salad's So Greek To Me 09/07/2011
I've heard the adage about trying anything once. So while surrounded by Greek-inspired architecture, I ordered Greek Salad for appetizer. It was drizzling in Thunderbird Hotel-Resort in La Union and I tagged along two of my college classmates to dinner at the hotel-restaurant called Olives. After sampling the salad, I immediately understood why the restaurant is named as such. ![]() Me and my co-saladeers Greek Salad, or horiatiki salata, is a rough country salad of juicy tomatoes, crisp cucumber, sliced red onion, green pepper, crumbly feta cheese and plump black or kalamata olives from the Greek city of the same name. This I learned from a recipe website here. The olives, serving as the meat of the salad, gave contrast to the leafy texture in the mouth. Its strong salty flavor even rivals the more subdued Spanish olive. When served right, it can be mouth-watering. I, however, did not find the salad easy on my taste as I don't adjust easily to cuisines of other countries. Maybe I'll try it again. At least I've tried it once... | Why Indulge?
